The Rhythms Of Stone

with DJ Garrity
July 13-16 (4 days)
Award-winning sculptor
DJ Garrity will lead a
fascinating exploration of the art of stone
sculpture on Quadra Island this summer. The
workshop is a study in three-dimensional deductive
sculpture that also pertains
to wood carvers with a desire to learn the techniques involved in
carving the human face.

DJ,
who served three tours of duty as Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount
Rushmore National Memorial, has established an international reputation
with his innovative workshop, which has been well received by artists
and non-artists--with many participants having no previous background in
the arts.
This workshop is for artists with
a desire to add three-dimensional sculpture to their body of work and
people with an interest in stone or wood carving, garden art and
portraiture. Garrity states that his approach, a blend of both
traditional and refined carving techniques, translates surprisingly well
in the workshop environment.
The use of simple hand tools with a
focus on the expressive qualities of the human face allows students to
finesse compelling images from stone and wood. The artist, who lives on
the Oregon Coast, will conduct the Quadra Island sculpture workshop from
July 13 –16, 2009.

Biography
DJ
Garrity is a sculptor, painter and journeyman along the margins of
abstract expression. His world is one of long vistas and boundless
horizons from the Badlands of South Dakota, to the windswept edge of
Western Europe. The expressive influence of place and a deep empathy
with the nuances of the human condition are signatory in his work and
elicit an intuitive sense of unrestrained eloquence, a narrative of
form, color and emotion.
In the past five years, DJ Garrity has
served three tours of duty as the Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount
Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota and was
invited
to participate in both the 2005/2007
Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea in the historical Fortezza
da Basso in Florence, Italy.
During this same period
Garrity conducted lectures from coast-to-coast while dividing his time
between Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, the high desert of Taos, New
Mexico and Keem Bay on Achill Island, Ireland. The artist currently
resides in Manzanita, a seaside village along the Northwest Coast of
Oregon.
